The Boatload of Knowledge at 200: An Inaugural Bicentennial Lecture

The Boatload of Knowledge at 200: An Inaugural Bicentennial Lecture

This program commemorates the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Philanthropist, famously known as the “Boatload of Knowledge.” Its passengers—educators, scientists, artists, and reformers—brought transformative ideas to the emerging Owen-Maclure community in 1826. Their influence played a significant role in shaping New Harmony into an important center for learning and social experimentation.

The event will include remarks from Diane Sanders and Ryan Rokicki, the Co-chairs of the Owen-Maclure 200th Anniversary. The keynote lecture will be presented by Dr. Gerald Gutek, a prominent historian of education and the author of several publications on early American schooling. Dr. Gutek will explore the significance of the Boatload of Knowledge, the individuals involved, and the enduring impact of their contributions to New Harmony and beyond.

Saturday, January 24, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Following Owen’s Footsteps: A Photographic Journey from Newtown to New Harmony

Following Owen’s Footsteps: A Photographic Journey from Newtown to New Harmony

Rod Clark Blends travel photography with historical insight, offering a vivid photographic exploration of the places that shaped Robert Owen’s visionary experiment in community through images captured in Newtown, Wales; New Lanark, Scotland; and New Harmony, Indiana. Rod traces the landscapes, architecture, and ideas that defined Owen’s transatlantic world.  The program will offer a unique look at how the ideals of the Community of Equality were rooted in and transformed by the places Owen called home. You will gain fresh perspectives on the people, hopes, and complexities behind one of the most ambitious social experiments of the 19th century.
